Bernard Francis Corrigan (Bernie), 83, formerly of Manheim, PA, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2019, at St. Martha Villa, Downingtown. He was the widower of Mary V. Corrigan (nee Petery), with whom he shared 38 years of marriage at the time of her death in February 2014.
Born on Chesterbrook Farm, Berwyn, PA, he was the son of Patrick J. Corrigan and Anna McDonagh Corrigan. He graduated from Tredyffrin Easttown High School in 1954 and attended St. Joseph’s University. His high school class will be celebrating their 65th reunion this weekend.
He was employed as a mechanic in local industries prior to serving as Steward of Downingtown VFW for many years; retiring from Penn National Racetrack in 2009.
Bernie was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Church, Manheim. He was a member of the Westdown Hunting Camp. Bernie enjoyed sports, especially Manheim Central Barons football, St. Joe’s basketball, the Phillies and the Eagles. He and his wife, Mary, will be remembered for baking and gifting their wonderful pumpkin breads to family and friends at Christmas.
Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Cannon (Ocean Pines, MD) and Mary Bergen (Jupiter, FL), and one brother, Thomas (Mary Louise) of Downingtown. Bernie was the favorite uncle of many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three older brothers, Joseph (Charlotte), James (Eleanor), and Edward.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 332 Manor Avenue, Downingtown. The viewing will be held from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. with a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
