Tribute

After a three year battle, Gordon S. Ziegler Jr., 82, of Downingtown, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 22, 2020.  Gordon is survived by his wife, Barbara, the love of his life with whom he was married to for 60 years.  He treasured their three children and their spouses Gordon III, aka Chip (Jennifer), Catherine (deceased), and Cindy (Danny), as well as their six grandchildren.

Gordon was born in Queens, NY.   He was raised by his parents Helen and Gordon Ziegler in Manhasset on Long Island.  He has two sisters Elaine (deceased) and Lois.  He attended Saint Paul’s School in Garden City, NY as well as Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.  He and Barbara lived much of their married life in Muttontown, NY before moving to Pennsylvania.  They spent their winters in Palm City, Florida, where they were members of Harbour Ridge CC for 26 years.

Gordon’s father founded an early version of Ziegler Chemical & Mineral Corp in 1925.  Gordon began his long career with the company in 1960 continuing to advise until his death.  With his strong, confident personality, he helped to make it a world leader in Gilsonite production.  This natural black ore from family owned mines in Utah has been used in paints, pavement,  and even newspaper ink.

Throughout his life, Gordon loved to play golf as well as cards and backgammon with his friends. He was a long time member of the Long Island Lion's Club.  He enjoyed dining and traveling with Barbara and his family.  He was a skilled wood craftsman fixing, building and creating pieces for Barbara’s antique business and the family.  He was an avid reader and master of the NY Times crossword puzzle.  He was a great story teller and always had a joke to tell.  His big heart and generosity will forever be missed.
