Joseph Attilio Sciarretta “Joe Rags”, 89, of Downingtown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at the home of his eldest son, Joe in Millersville, surrounding by his loving family.
Born on August 11, 1930, Joe Rags is survived by his three children, Joseph A. (Claudia) Sciarretta, Jr. of Millervsville, Rosemarie A. Sciarretta of Coatesville, and David M. (Nancy) Sciarretta of Oxford. Also, survived by his two grandsons, Christopher Sciarretta and Jonathan Sciarretta. Joe was predeceased by his granddaughter, Erika Crabb Weber. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie Doto Sciarretta, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.
In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Dolores DiBerardinis of Downingtown, Michael Sciarretta of Downingtown, and Patricia Bonaduce of Lancaster. He is predeceased by his siblings, Janet Gubur and Cathleen Forte. Born and raised in Downingtown, he was the son of the late Attilio Michael Sciarretta and Emily Girafalco Sciarretta.
Joe Rags was a 1950 graduate of Downingtown High School where he excelled in Junior High and Senior High basketball, football, track and field. He was employed by Downingtown Paper Company for 25 years. He also was employed by G.O. Carlson’s for 10 years and his last employment was with Downingtown Area School District where he was Head Custodian at Beaver Creek Elementary School for 13 years, he was fondly known by all, as Mr. Joe.
He was a member of the Cornog Trout Club for over 30 years. He was a lifelong member of the St. Anthony’s Lodge and on the committee of the Amphibious Order of Frogs for over 60 years. He was one of the original founding members of Camp Wishy, a hunting camp/lodge in Dushore. And was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Downingtown.
His strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the outpouring of love, support and prayers of family and friends has been nothing short of amazing. We thank you so very kindly.
An evening visitation will be held on Thursday, January 23rd where family and friends may be received from 6 to 8 pm at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown.
A morning visitation will be held on Friday, January 24th from 10 to 10:45 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 338 Manor Avenue, Downingtown, where his Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am.
Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Downingtown.
