Kurt W. Martin, 64, of Malvern, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Paoli Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Simone Sitman Martin, with whom he shared 23 years of marriage.

Born in Roslyn, New York, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Alice L. Nickerson Martin.

In addition to his wife, Kurt is survived by his children, Johanna and William Schmidt; his sister, Carol E. Martin Jordan; his brother, Gary R. Martin (Jesse); and his father-in-law, William D. Sitman.  He is also survived by four nephews, Justin R. Coe (Lauren), Aaron M. Coe (Alejandra), Garrett Martin and Andrew Martin (Erin); and by a great nephew, Jack Martin.

Kurt spent his earliest years on Long Island, NY and much of his youth in Cinnaminson, NJ with his parents and beloved sister and brother. After relocating to Pennsylvania to attend college, he made Chester County his home. He earned three Bachelor’s Degrees each in Respiratory Therapy, Hospital Administration and Accounting. Kurt’s expertise and his compassion for taking care of others culminated in a 40-year career as a Respiratory Therapist, working at Brandywine Hospital, Christiana Hospital, Lifecare and a local medical homecare company.

He was well known to patiently mentor others with his knowledge of Respiratory Care, carpentry, building, DIY projects and various life skills. Kurt could (and did) build and fix anything, inspiring a “How did he know how to do that?!” after every project.

He loved to spend summers at the cottage in Canada (both relaxing and renovating) and out on the lake with his boat, always hoping to retire there someday. When not at the cottage, Kurt and Simone enjoyed many adventures in their little camper, saying “This is the perfect camper” every time he used it. He really loved that camper!

And, of course, his best times were with his family. He helped Simone raise their children, instilling his best traits in them and will be remembered as an excellent provider and role-model. He watched his sister and brother raise their sons into fine men, making it impossible to pick a favorite nephew. Nothing brought more joy to Kurt’s life than being Boompa to his “grandchildren”, Katie and Matt, the children of his best friends Quynh and Julie. Some of his fondest memories were made with them while vacationing, cooking, building, thrifting and on many other excursions.

After 4 years of a strikingly positive attitude, supported by his caring wife and family, Kurt succumbed to cancer. The amazing care he received from the health care professionals involved in his treatment brought great comfort to him. Kurt was always confident that they were all fully invested in giving him the highest quality of life during his cancer journey. For this, his family is eternally grateful.

Kurt will leave his loved ones with great memories of how he made our lives better with his kind-hearted willingness to help others, his subtle dry humor and his wonderful smile.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2022 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown. Family and friends will be received from 2:45-3:45 p.m.
