Michael C. Dougherty, 75, of Thorndale, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Chester County Hospital. He was the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy Dougherty (nee Colgan), and husband of 54 years to Lillian Griffin.
Michael was a U.S. Airforce veteran(Vietnam) and spoke very favorably of his times in the service as an aircraft mechanic and debriefing pilots on the planes. He primarily worked on B-52 bombers. Also, during his time in the service, Michael was approached by NASA and asked if he was willing to travel to space. Although he never pursued this- it was something that was he liked to share with family and friends. After his time in the service, he worked for Philadelphia Electric (Peco)where he eventually retired from. He was second in command of their nuclear power plants. Michael attended Drexel University and studied engineering. Also, Michael was an inventor-2 of which were patented. One of his inventions was developed and used in the US military. Before a car accident that was detrimental to his health- Michael had many hobbies. For example, he coached little league for his children, he enjoyed taking trips and traveling, playing tennis and basketball, and golfing. He also enjoyed working with computers as a pastime. Michael will be remembered for his playful sense of humor and constant one-liners. Michael was a God-fearing man who loved his family.
In addition to his wife, Lillian, he is survived by his sons, Michael Jr. (Tracey), Darrin (Melissa), Dawn who was his caregiver, grandchildren, Susan, Andrew, Lauren, and Bryan, two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Gabriel; his brother, Robert Dougherty and his sister Dorothy Gambino. Michael is preceded in death by; his parents; brothers- Joe, George, and Jack.
Services for Michael will be Thursday, July 2, 2020, 11:00 AM at the James J. Terry Funeral Home Downingtown Location, 736 E. Lancaster Ave. Downingtown PA 19335. A visitation will be held prior at the funeral home from 9:30 AM – 10:45 AM.
