Robert E. Maholland

Robert E. Maholland, age 88, passed peacefully at home on January 12, 2022.  He shared 66 years of marriage with Marilyn Ann Maholland (Rogers).  They were married at the Hopewell Methodist Chapel in June 1955.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn; three children and their spouses, Becky Maholland Gillespie (Steve), Shawn Maholland (Carol) and Roslyn Maholland (Bud Murock); two grandchildren, Michele Maholland, and Sara Maholland; a brother, Albert Money Jr. (Carol); a sister Joyce Guest; many nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend of nearly 85 years, Mr. John Green of West Chester.

Bob was born in West Chester, the third child in a family of six.  He was raised by his mother Helen Painter Burnett and step-father Albert Money.  He grew up on a nearby farm and then in Green Hill.  He attended the local Sunday school (Green Hill Chapel).  Later, as an adult, he was the pitcher for their men’s softball team and at one point president of the local league.  He and some of his teammates did the original construction of what is now known as Cloud Field.  The property that was donated by teammate Tom Burneson’s Uncle Freedley.  He was always proud of helping to clear the land and secure the original backstop for the field. 

After graduating from Henderson High School in 1951 and working at Schramm’s and Penny’s as a machinist he joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.  He was stationed in the Alaska Territory (it was not yet a state) and served as a radar operator aboard B17 planes for the Sea Rescue team.  Later he was stationed at the U.S. Airforce base in Ocean City, New Jersey.

After the Air Force Bob was employed by Beloit in Downingtown as a skilled machinist.  He became better known as Moe over the years and was seen regularly at the Coffee Cup, Four J’s and the local hardware store.  Moe was also an artist – he loved his guitar, had strong opinions about music, and he wrote truly beautiful songs and poems, did much wood working including building picture frames and other items, he could figure out how to fix almost anything. He was a true sportsman enjoying hunting in PA and made two trips to Wyoming.  He loved working in his flower beds and was known for his begonias and dahlias.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 East Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown PA. Interment will follow at Philadelphia Memorial Park, 124 Phoenixville Pike, Frazer, PA 19355.
